The Daily Aztec

Joining The Daily Aztec, San Diego State’s student newspaper, has been easily the most meaningful and important journalistic experience of my career. I was able to both hone my craft as a journalist as well as lead a team of sports writers while working as the sports editor. Below I have included some of the highlights during my time with The Daily Aztec, but the entirety of my work can be located here.

During time as sports editor for The Daily Aztec, the SDSU men’s basketball team advanced to the NCAA Tournament Final Four in 2023. The Daily Aztec was fortunate enough to secure credentials for the event, so my other sports editor and I found a way to make it to Houston to cover the Aztecs. Below is the work I had the privilege to create while covering the Aztecs at the biggest college basketball event in the world.

Opinion Writing

During my senior year at San Diego State, I also began writing a monthly opinion column for our monthly print issues. When I began this project I didn’t have much experience with opinion writing, so this was a great way to both find my voice as a writer as well as learn to form an opinion. Below are some examples of my work.

Column: Bradley and Trammell’s shooting slumps give no reason for panic
Column: Football coaching changes provide chance to save present and future
Column: Darrion Trammell ready to shine when it matters most

Game Stories

As both a staff writer and editor I covered numerous San Diego State sports. From major spectator sports such as basektball and football to some of the smaller sports like water polo and swim and dive, I was able to grow as a sports journalist by writing game stories. I have included some of my favorites below, but all of my work can be found here.
